My name is Kristie Laplante, I am 21 years old, a Florida native; born and raised in Miami Gardens to Haitian parents of Port-Au-Prince. Below I’ve attached four photos of myself as well as my prompt response.
I would like to be on the cover of Haiti Open Magazine because I want to show my family and others with a similar rhetoric that you can be successful through the arts. That these talents can lead to a life worth living. My family, the Haitian people, have this knack for creativity; a gravitational pull almost. However as they get older, they turned their backs on it because they have to provide or to “stop being childish.” Although in my personal situation, it was never a verbal message like in stereotypical Haitian fashion. Actions however, do speak louder than words.
I have seen several relatives leave the creative world behind to pursue something more…realistic. Even I turned my back on the arts at some point to pursue STEM. Although I do enjoy science, my main reasoning for my choice of study was because I assimilated the same generational ideology.
