Greetings! My name is Michkia Deneau and I am in school for African American Psychology. I currently attend FAMU, with the hopes of pursuing a career in racial sensitive therapy. Both of my parents were born and raised in Haiti and came to America on student visa’s. Being Haitian American is a huge part of my identity and I feel like this contest would be an amazing way to showcase that side of me. My parents managed to give me the world and more without even having the resources to do so. I am beyond grateful for them but I am even more grateful for the culture that molded them into the people they are today. This may sound cliche but making it on the cover of this magazine is something I want to do for THEM rather than myself. As their child, I constantly want to repay them for all they’ve done for me. Till this day, I still can’t believe how they managed to give me a good life despite growing up in harsh conditions. To pay them back, I do everything in my power to make them happy.
